What does the LNAT test?

The LNAT doesn’t necessarily test legal knowledge, but it does assess your critical thinking, logical reasoning, and essay-writing skills. A good LNAT score is crucial to obtaining that dream offer, especially at the UK’s most competitive universities.

The test is divided into two parts:

Section A:
A 95-minute multiple-choice segment where you’ll analyze passages and answer 42 questions testing comprehension and critical reasoning.

Section B:
A 40-minute essay section where you’ll choose one of three prompts to demonstrate your ability to construct a coherent, persuasive argument.

Over 9,000 applicants sit the LNAT annually.

Fewer than 20% of applicants receive offers to LNAT-required law programs.

Used by 10+ leading universities in the UK and internationally.

What to expect from your LNAT package:

Once you’ve purchased your LNAT package, you’ll receive comprehensive help guiding you through every step. Here’s what to expect from a typical package, though it may vary depending on how many hours you choose to book with us.

Step 1: Diagnostic lesson
Your LNAT journey begins with a comprehensive diagnostic session. We assess your current strengths and weaknesses, focusing on the key areas of the test: critical thinking, reading comprehension, and essay writing. This step helps your tutor create a personalized study plan tailored to your unique needs.

Step 2: Critical Thinking and Reading Practice
The first section of the LNAT tests your ability to analyze complex passages and answer multiple-choice questions. Your tutor will guide you through strategies to identify arguments, evaluate evidence, and pinpoint the author’s assumptions.

Step 3: Essay Writing Mastery
The second section requires a well-structured, persuasive essay. Your tutor will help you understand how to address the prompt effectively, develop clear arguments, and refine your writing style under timed conditions.

Step 4: Mock LNAT Tests
To prepare you for the test day, we provide full-length, timed mock tests replicating the LNAT experience. Our detailed feedback, once you’ve submitted your work to us, will highlight areas for improvement and track your progress.

Step 5: Review and Final Preparation
In the final phase, your tutor will review your performance across all sections, reinforcing key strategies and addressing any lingering challenges.

Want the best LNAT score possible? You’ll need a strategy.

Don’t miss these pesky LNAT deadlines!

For 2026 entry. These dates may vary by year.

1 August 2025 – Registration for and booking of LNAT tests for entry into university in September 2026 opens.

1 September 2025 – Testing starts.

15 October – Final deadline to take the LNAT if applying to Oxford or Cambridge. This is also the UCAS application deadline for these universities (you can find out more about UCAS, which is the UK’s platform for university applications, on our blog).

January 2026 – For other universities that accept the LNAT (e.g., King’s College London, UCL, and others), tests must be completed by their specific deadlines, often in mid to late January.

Mid-February 2026 – LNAT results are released to applicants and universities.

FAQs about the LNAT:

  • Here’s a list of every single university that requires the LNAT:

    UK Universities:

    University of Bristol

    University of Cambridge

    Durham University

    University of Glasgow

    King's College London

London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

    University of Oxford

    SOAS, University of London

    University College London (UCL)

    Non-UK Universities:

    Singapore University of Social Sciences

    IE University (Spain)

If you’re applying to any of the above, you’ll need to register for your test and prepare with plenty of time.

  • The LNAT is unusual in that it scores the two sections differently. Section A is multiple choice, so you’re scored numerically out of 42. The essay in Section B, on the other hand, is not scored numerically at all, and is sent to the universities for them to assess individually.

  • A ‘good’ score depends on the university and year. Competitive universities like Oxford or Cambridge usually look for very high scores around 27-30, which is above the national average. Any score around 22-27 is usually considered a ‘good’ score. But don’t worry, universities don’t have strict rules on this and will consider other aspects of your application, such as your personal statement.

  • You can’t take two LNAT tests in the same application year. If you’re not happy with your results (or your offers), you’ll have to reapply in the following year.

  • Preparation involves practicing comprehension questions and argumentative essays. Your Think Smart tutor is well versed in LNAT preparation, and will make sure you don’t miss anything important!

  • No, LNAT scores are valid only for the year in which you apply. If reapplying, you must retake the test in the following year.

  • LNAT results are sent directly to the universities after the test is taken. You’ll receive your personal score later, usually around spring.

  • The LNAT can be a nerve wracking test to take, especially if you’re not used to studying law at school. But with the right preparation, there’s no reason you shouldn’t feel super confident on the day.

  • Yes, the LNAT is available in many countries worldwide at designated Pearson VUE test centers. You can find a full list of test locations on the official LNAT website.

  • If no test center is available nearby, you may need to travel to a neighboring country. Contact LNAT support to discuss your options.

  • No, the LNAT is only offered in English. If English isn’t your first language, make sure to prepare thoroughly by practising writing in academic English under timed conditions. Some international students can find this the most challenging part of the test.
