English A: Language & Literature. Why do you need this?
1. To fulfill the requirements of the IB diploma program: passing the English Literature exam is one of the requirements to earn the IB diploma.
2. To prepare for university studies: the skills developed through studying English Literature and preparing for the IB exam can help students in future academic pursuits.
3. To enhance critical thinking skills: analyzing literature requires close reading and critical thinking skills, which can be applied to other areas of study and life.
4. To expand cultural knowledge: studying literature from different cultures and periods can broaden students' understanding and appreciation of different cultures and worldviews.
English literature course syllabus consists of these components:
Readers, Writers, and Texts.
This section is composed of strictly non-literary texts, which are chosen from as wide of a variety of sources as possible, and works are selected from several literary forms. Students investigate the depth of the texts, contexts, complexities, how they operate, and how they are produced and receptive. The focus of this is developing both critical and personal responses.
Time and Space
These non-literary texts and literary works are derived from different sources to reflect the varying historical and cultural perspectives. The focus is on the context of the use of language and how such texts echo and frame society. A prominent aspect of this topic is to become fully aware of the relationship between contexts and their meanings.
Intertextuality: Connecting Texts
Both non-literary and literary texts from a wide variety of sources are chosen for students to expand their knowledge and understanding and learn how to make proper comparisons. This part of the course focuses on the relationships between texts with the option to pursue several topics known throughout the course. Students learn to develop critical thinking and responses from understanding said relationships between texts.
Paper 1 - Guided Textual Analysis
This paper, like all papers, is divided into the category of the course you are taking.
SL (Standard Level): A guided analysis of one from a choice of two previously unseen non-literary extracts
HL (Higher Level): Two conducted studies of previously unseen non-literary quotes or texts
Paper 2 - Comparative Essay
This paper is the same for both SL and HL. This case consists of students being presented with four general questions. They choose one, to which, in response, they must write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course.
Our tutors are well familiar with all works studied in this course and will walk you through everything from A to Z.
Individual Oral
This component of the IB program consists of one individual oral. This prepared verbal response to a work originally written in the language studied and one work studied in translation that have both addressed a global issue. assessed internally by your teacher, and externally moderated by the IB at the end of the course.
HL Essay
This part of the course is only for those taking HL. Here, students write and submit an essay based on:
One non-literary text
A collection of non-literary texts (by the same author)
A literary text
A work studied during the course.
The essay must be 1200 to 1500 words in length.
