What does the MAT test?

The MAT is a 2.5-hour paper-based test, divided into two sections.

FAQs about the MAT

  • If you are applying for a Mathematics, Computer Science, or joint degree at the University of Oxford, taking the MAT is mandatory. It is accepted as additional, but not mandatory, information for most other UK universities like Warwick, Durham, and LSE. Be sure to check your course’s specific entry requirements on the university’s website.

  • Preparation should ideally begin several months in advance. Many students start preparation in the summer before the October test. You don’t want to rush this process!

  • You must register through Pearson VUE by the deadline. Registration typically needs to be completed by your school or test center, so make sure they handle the process on time.

  • The MAT is scored out of 100. 

  • The average offer-holder for Mathematics or Computer Science at Oxford scores above 70 on the MAT.

  • No, there is no penalty for incorrect answers.

  • Yes, the MAT is open to international students, and you’ll have to take the test at an approved test center in your country.

  • It can vary slightly by year, but MAT registration usually closes by the beginning of October.

  • The MAT tests mathematical reasoning, algebra, calculus, and problem-solving skills.

  • No, calculators are not allowed. Neither are formula sheets or dictionaries.

  • While other elements like your statement and grades matter, a strong MAT score significantly boosts your chances of getting an interview, which is key to eventually obtaining an offer.
