Think Smart your way to MAT with elite tutors
Master mathematics, ace the MAT and get that dream university offer.
The Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) is one of the most difficult UK entrance exams. Designed to assess the genuine mathematical understanding of a student, rather than their speed or rote memorisation, it is a key factor in the admissions process of both the University of Oxford and Imperial College London.
But don’t worry, we’ve got your back! With our expert team of MAT tutors, you’re guaranteed to sit the exam with confidence.

What does the MAT test?
The MAT is a 2.5-hour paper-based test, divided into two sections.
Format | Marks | |
---|---|---|
Section 1 | 10 multiple choice questions | 4 marks for each question (40 marks in total) |
Section 2 | 4-5 longer questions requiring written workings | 15 marks for each question |
The test is structured with multiple-choice and long-form questions focused on problem-solving, logical reasoning, and fluency in essential mathematical techniques. It often tests unusual or abstract questions, as tutors are looking to see if you can apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts.
So ironically, the MAT tests creativity just as much as learned formulas.
You don’t have to take our word for it…
With only 20% of Oxford Mathematics applicants shortlisted for interviews, the MAT is your gateway to success.
Once you’ve purchased your MAT package, you’ll receive comprehensive help guiding you through every step. Here’s what to expect from a typical package, though it may vary depending on how many hours you choose to book with us.
What to expect from your MAT package:
Step 1: Diagnostic lesson
Your journey with Think Smart will always begin with a comprehensive diagnostic session, so that we can create a personalized study plan tailored to your unique needs. Your tutor will assess your strengths and weaknesses, focusing on your current mathematical knowledge, problem solving skills, and any areas of improvement.
Step 2: Mastering content and problem-solving skills
Your tutor will ensure you have a solid understanding of all areas of mathematics that are likely to come up, like algebra, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry. And because the MAT emphasizes mathematical reasoning, your tutor will guide you through MAT-specific techniques, such as deconstructing complex problems, avoiding common pitfalls, and refining your approach to multi-step questions.
Step 3: Practice with Past Papers
Your tutor will use official MAT past papers to simulate exam conditions. Initially, your tutor will introduce you to the past papers with a heavily guided approach to the questions until you gain enough confidence to do it independently. Each session includes insights into scoring criteria and personalized feedback to improve your approach.
Step 4: Final Review and Mock Exams
In the weeks leading up to the MAT, you’ll undergo mock exams designed to mimic the real test. These sessions will pinpoint any remaining areas for improvement, helping you feel fully prepared and confident on test day.
Step 5: Ongoing Support
Even after your final session, we’re here to help. If you have questions or need advice, our tutors remain available for guidance and encouragement throughout the application process.
This comprehensive package equips you not only to take the MAT but to excel with confidence, ensuring you’re fully prepared for every challenge the test presents.
8,000+ students typically sit the MAT annually.
Only about 5% of applicants to Oxford Mathematics
are accepted.
