TOK Core and Optional Themes

TOK

What You Really Need to Know

Confidently tackle your TOK essays & exhibitions by clearing up confusion around TOK themes (formerly Ways of Knowing).

What’s the Difference Between the TOK Core and Optional Themes?

Feeling unsure about the difference between the Core Theme and Optional Themes (formerly Ways of Knowing) is completely normal, especially if your textbooks or teachers haven't clarified things.

Here's the quick breakdown:

  • Core Theme (Mandatory): Explores "Knowledge and the Knower"—focusing on how you personally and culturally interact with knowledge.

  • Optional Themes: You select two from Language, Technology, Politics, Religion, or Indigenous Societies to explore how knowledge is created and understood in these specialized contexts.

Clearly grasping these themes from the start simplifies your TOK assessments, helping you confidently pick topics, structure your writing clearly, and avoid confusion.

Looking for some extra clarity on your themes?

We're here to help.

Why Are TOK Themes Important?

The IB doesn't want you memorizing random information—it wants you to understand how context shapes knowledge. This involves exploring how personal experiences, culture, language, technology, and even politics influence what we know.

Practically speaking, understanding these themes clearly helps you:

  • Quickly choose relevant examples for your essays and exhibitions.

  • Write more structured and focused analyses.

  • Achieve higher scores with less effort.

Feeling unsure where to start?
Let’s figure it out together.

TOK categorizes the former ‘Ways of Knowing’ into the one Core Theme (mandatory) and several Optional Themes. Let’s simplify each one clearly, so you instantly know how to use them in your TOK assessments.

Core Theme (Compulsory): Knowledge and the Knower

What it is:
This theme is all about how your personal experiences, emotions, and perspectives shape what you know and believe.

Simple example:
Two people watch the exact same movie. One finds it deeply moving, while the other thinks it’s dull. Why the difference? Personal background, emotional experiences, and beliefs shape how each interprets the same story.

Typical TOK questions:

  • How do our emotions and experiences influence what we consider "true"?

  • Is personal bias always problematic, or can it help us discover unique insights?

Optional Theme 1: Knowledge and Technology

What it is:
How advancements in technology affect what we know, how quickly we access it, and how deeply we understand it.

Simple example:
Thanks to Google and AI tools like ChatGPT, we can instantly find answers—but does having immediate access to information actually make us smarter, or does it weaken our ability to think critically and independently?

Typical TOK questions:

  • How does technology redefine what it means to "know" something?

  • Can technology fully replace human reasoning, or will there always be a gap?

Optional Theme 2: Knowledge and Language

What it is:
Exploring how language influences what we know, how clearly we understand it, and how effectively we communicate it.

Simple example:
If you're bilingual, you’ve probably noticed some ideas are easier to express in one language than the other. Does this mean you "know" differently depending on the language you use?

Typical TOK questions:

  • How does language shape or restrict what we can understand?

  • Is it possible to truly know something without having the language to describe it?

Optional Theme 3: Knowledge and Politics

What it is:
Looking at how politics, power structures, and ideological beliefs impact what counts as knowledge and truth.

Simple example:
The same political event often gets reported differently by various news sources. Why? Because politics, power, and perspective shape what gets emphasized and what gets ignored.

Typical TOK questions:

  • Does all knowledge come with a political bias?

  • How do power dynamics influence what society accepts as "true"?

Optional Theme 4: Knowledge and Religion

What it is:
Understanding how religious beliefs and spirituality affect our perception of knowledge, truth, and evidence.

Simple example:
Consider the differing explanations of human origins offered by science (evolution) and religion (creation). Each uses a different standard of evidence—faith versus empirical data.

Typical TOK questions:

  • Can religious faith count as knowledge, even if it isn't empirically proven?

  • Is faith fundamentally incompatible with scientific methods, or can they complement each other?

Optional Theme 5: Knowledge and Indigenous Societies

What it is:
Examining how indigenous cultures create, maintain, and pass down knowledge differently than modern, globalized societies.

Simple example:
In many indigenous communities, knowledge is preserved through oral storytelling rather than written documents. Does this make their knowledge less valid or less reliable?

Typical TOK questions:

  • How can traditional indigenous knowledge coexist or interact with modern scientific methods?

  • What valuable insights can the world gain from indigenous approaches to knowing?

Common TOK Theme Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

When working with TOK Themes, students often make similar mistakes:

  • Choosing overly complex or abstract examples, forgetting to clearly link examples back to the knowledge questions, and misunderstanding the focus of each theme, leading to off-topic discussions.

Easy solutions to keep in mind:

  • Pick clear, relatable examples that you personally understand, always explicitly connect your examples to specific TOK questions, and get feedback early, ideally from someone experienced with TOK, to avoid unnecessary confusion or stress later.
